The Most Beautiful Salt You've Never Used in a Cocktail
Picture a deep crimson rim on a mezcal cocktail — floral, tart, and visually stunning before you even take a sip. That's what Sal de Jamaica does. Made from hibiscus flowers (flor de Jamaica) and sea salt, it's the most visually dramatic of Gran Mitla's salts, and one of the most versatile.
Hibiscus has a naturally tart, cranberry-like flavor with floral notes that complement citrus-forward cocktails beautifully. When combined with the smokiness of mezcal, the result is a drink that's complex, refreshing, and unlike anything you'll find at a standard bar.
Our Sal de Jamaica 100g jar is made with real hibiscus flowers — no artificial coloring, no shortcuts. The deep red color is entirely natural.
Recipe 1: The Hibiscus Mezcal Margarita
This is the cocktail that stops conversations. The crimson rim, the smoky mezcal, the floral tartness — it's a showstopper.
Ingredients
- 2 oz mezcal (joven or reposado)
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.75 oz hibiscus syrup (see below) or agave nectar
- 0.5 oz triple sec
- Ice
- Gran Mitla Sal de Jamaica — for the rim
- Dried hibiscus flower or lime wheel to garnish
Quick Hibiscus Syrup
Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and ¼ cup dried hibiscus flowers. Simmer 10 minutes, strain, and cool. Keeps refrigerated for 2 weeks.
Instructions
- Rim the glass: Moisten the rim of a rocks glass with lime juice. Press into a plate of Sal de Jamaica. The salt will turn the rim a gorgeous deep red.
- Shake: Combine mezcal, lime juice, hibiscus syrup, and triple sec in a shaker with ice. Shake hard for 15 seconds.
- Strain over fresh ice into the rimmed glass.
- Garnish with a dried hibiscus flower or lime wheel.
Pro tip: For a frozen version, blend all ingredients with 1 cup of ice. The Sal de Jamaica rim holds up beautifully on frozen drinks too.
Recipe 2: The Mezcal Hibiscus Sour
Egg white gives this cocktail a silky foam that makes the Sal de Jamaica rim even more dramatic.
Ingredients
- 2 oz mezcal
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.75 oz hibiscus syrup
- 1 egg white (or 1 oz aquafaba for vegan version)
- Ice
- Gran Mitla Sal de Jamaica — for the rim and garnish
Instructions
- Rim a coupe glass with Sal de Jamaica and set aside.
- Dry shake (no ice): Combine mezcal, lime juice, hibiscus syrup, and egg white in a shaker. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds to build foam.
- Wet shake: Add ice and shake again for 15 seconds.
- Double-strain into the rimmed coupe glass.
- Garnish with a pinch of Sal de Jamaica on the foam and a dried hibiscus flower.
The foam carries the floral salt beautifully — every sip delivers a little burst of hibiscus.
Recipe 3: Hibiscus Salt Agua Fresca Cocktail (Low-ABV)
Not everyone wants a strong cocktail. This lighter version uses hibiscus agua fresca as the base for a refreshing, lower-alcohol drink that's perfect for brunch or afternoon gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 oz mezcal or tequila
- 4 oz hibiscus agua fresca (steep dried hibiscus in cold water overnight, sweeten to taste)
- 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
- Sparkling water to top
- Ice
- Gran Mitla Sal de Jamaica packet — for the rim
Instructions
- Rim a tall glass with Sal de Jamaica.
- Fill with ice and add mezcal, agua fresca, and lime juice. Stir.
- Top with sparkling water.
- Garnish with a lime wheel and fresh mint.
Sal de Jamaica Beyond Cocktails
The versatility of hibiscus salt extends well beyond the bar. Try it:
- On fresh fruit: Watermelon, mango, and pineapple with Sal de Jamaica is a classic Mexican street food combination.
- On the rim of agua fresca glasses at parties — even the non-drinkers get the full experience.
- As a finishing salt on dark chocolate desserts for a floral, tart contrast.
- On ceviche — the tartness of hibiscus complements citrus-cured fish beautifully.
The Gran Mitla Difference
Our salts aren't blended in a factory. They're made using traditional Oaxacan methods with real ingredients — real hibiscus flowers, real grasshoppers, real agave worms. Read our story to understand why that matters to us and why it should matter to you.
